Mr Data Loss

I ran across this image in the latest Rat Shack (tm) ad that was mailed to me. Wow, just wow.

For those not in the know, the above is a hard disk drive. The inside of a hard disk drive. If this gentleman is not in a clean room (or some facimile thereof, but he would never be allowed in one dressed like that), he has likely caused irrepairable harm to this drive by the dust that has settled upon the platters.

Hopefully the drive went bad *before* Mr. Fixit decided to take it apart.

But yeah, after the hood's off, no amount of compresed air or data recovery software is going to save that hard drive or its contents.

I make fun of this ad, but one of the coolest casemods idea I've seen/heard of involves putting a window on your drive (or drives, a raid 0 array would be really cool to watch in action). It roughly involves starting with dataless disks, make something close to a clean room out of your bathroom and do everything you can to keep any dust/debris outside of the drive while modifying it. After the mod's done, give the drive a full workout to make sure there's no real damage. There are airfilters and catch spots to try and handle any debris that may have gotten in the drive in manufacturing or in running it and lower density drives used to be more exposed (such as syquest cartridges and the ancient disk packs of the 70's) so a disk will likely survive much more than most people give disks credit for. But I still think the ad company who made this is clueless.

The old Quantum Bigfoot hard drives actually had a small window built into their cases, and you could watch the heads move back and forth during seeks. It was entertaining, but it was a pretty tiny window.

...And hello :-) Hope things are well with you...
